Higher ed is important to climate action for many reasons: our students will lead on climate issues, universities are incubators for sustainable solutions and best practices, academics lead on climate research, and our campuses set green examples for our communities. But outside of the classroom, and outside of the laboratory, how do you encourage sustainable thinking among your campus?
Some campuses encourage sustainable thinking at sporting events; by pledging zero-waste at a football game, or implementing carbon neutral athletic programs, colleges are reaching out to thousands of fans. Other campuses have focused on sustainable dining through on-campus farms, locally sourcing produce and meat, and instituting ambitious composting programs.
Most of these initiatives are aimed at students, but administrators and university personnel are just as important when it comes to sustainability. Wesleyan University’s Green Team is made up a group of administrators who are implementing strategies to reduce waste and energy use, and perhaps most importantly – to encourage their colleagues to think sustainably. By outreaching to administrators and campus personnel and including them on the climate conversation, we can ensure that higher ed’s approach to climate action is as comprehensive as possible.

Wesleyan’s Green Team, currently comprised of six administrative assistants, is researching, communicating and implementing effective strategies that increase sustainability within their own departments and the university.
They’re currently focusing their efforts on managing waste sustainability, making sustainable purchases, reducing energy in their departments, encouraging colleagues and working to shift the culture of their areas to be sustainable.
