The Solution Generation Executive Committee of higher education leaders reached an important milestone on September 16, 2014. High profile leaders such as Dr. Muriel Howard of AASCU, Dr. Carlton Brown of Clark Atlanta University, Dr. Walter Bumphus of American Association of Community Colleges, Dr. Antonio Flores of Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and the full group of approximately 20 leaders brought their expertise, guidance and network together to launch Solution Generation to help their peers address climate change and engage their communities on solutions.
NEW HIGHER EDUCATION INITIATIVE INVITES AND EMPOWERS COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY LEADERS TO ENGAGE IN CLIMATE SOLUTIONS
ATLANTA, GA (September 16, 2014) – Solution Generation, a national initiative to catalyze higher education leadership on climate change solutions, officially launched today. Led by prominent higher education leaders from across the country, Solution Generation offers a new forum to engage in climate change leadership in ways that appeal to the values and opportunities unique to higher education.
Building on the success of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), the largest commitment to climate neutrality in the country, Solution Generation will provide new communications tools, research and resources for higher education leaders to design and implement strategies to inspire, educate and engage their faculty, staff, students, peers and communities on climate change solutions. Through leading by example in their campus operations, college and university presidents can empower their faculty and staff in providing students the inspiration, skills and knowledge they need to drive new climate change solutions.
“An important part of the campus culture among AASCU institutions is encouraging students to be engaged citizens. Fostering solutions to address climate change in order to create a healthier and more stable future for themselves, their community and their country is an important aspect of that engagement,” said Dr. Muriel A. Howard, president, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). “Joining Solution Generation deepens AASCU’s commitment to educate, prepare and inspire our students, and to support our members’ teaching-learning, research and service missions.”
Solution Generation is the latest program to be launched through MomentUs, a national initiative designed to increase personal and institutional support for climate change solutions among mainstream Americans.
“Higher education leaders have a unique opportunity to lead on climate solutions now to improve our livelihoods and those of our next generation,” said Bob Perkowitz, founder and president, ecoAmerica, the organization that runs MomentUs. “Students and presidents alike are concerned by the impacts of climate change and want to be part of the solution. Higher education leaders are already demonstrating their leadership by reducing their climate impact, and agree that now is the time to inspire and engage the full diversity of their campuses and communities in climate solutions.”
“Solution Generation provides higher education leaders with tools, resources and best practices they are generally not able to create on their own,” said. Dr. Carlton Brown, President, Clark Atlanta University. “Our college will greatly value Solution Generation, and appreciate the broadly resonant and accessible approach of the program to engaging in climate solutions. I encourage all higher education leaders to join us on a path to a positive future and join Solution Generation.”
Solution Generation invites higher education leaders across America to get on the “Path to Positive” by making a commitment to lead by example and engage others in climate solutions. Similar to how other social movements have successfully coalesced diverse leaders and stakeholders around a common cause, the “Path to Positive” statement, with a vision, principles and commitment, is designed to unite American higher education, faith, health, business and community leaders to support and progress climate change solutions.
Solution Generation is led by prominent higher education leaders, including:
- Dr. Muriel Howard, President, American Association of State Colleges and Universities
- Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities
- Dr. John Anderson, President, Millersville University
- Dr. Carlton Brown, President, Clark Atlanta University
- Dr. Jerry Weber, President, College of Lake County
